On 6 January Hong Kong police arrested 53 democracy activists, trade unionists and socialists. On 28th February, 47 of them were charged with “subverting state power” under the National Security Law for organising primaries for pro-democracy candidates for HK’s Legislative Council.
They include Carol Ng, chair of the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions; Winnie Yu, chair of Healthworkers’ Union Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (HAEA), which organised strikes against the government’s complacency over Covid; and veteran socialist and former Legislative Council member “Long Hair” Leung Kwok-hung.
A recent wave of repression by the Chinese government has involved suppression of workers’ organisations throughout China and incarceration of hundreds of thousands of Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang/East Turkestan.
We call on the Labour Party and trade union leaderships to build solidarity with comrades fighting for workers’ rights and democracy in China and demand an end to repression, freedom for the Uyghurs, and release of Hong Kong political prisoners.
